2017 - 2018 Mason Dixon League Season

 

The Mason Dixon Wrestling League ("MDWL") is a kids (up to 14 years old) amateur wrestling league concentrated in Northern VA, WV (Panhandle Area), and MD (Hagerstown).  The MDWL consists of about 19 teams that practice and compete during the late fall and winter months.  Most teams are active from around the beginning of November to early March.  Among other things the League strives to introduce wrestling to beginners as well as prepare wrestlers for high school wrestling and teach good sportsmanship.  Weight classes range from 36 lbs pounds to heavyweight 226 lbs and are separated by age and skill level.  Skill levels range 1 (Beginners) to 4 (Advanced), so kids will wrestle others that are same weight/age/experience level.  All teams participate in a modified dual meet format during the season and finish with the MDWL League Championships at the end of the season. 

MDWL Weight Classes: 

1)  A wrestlers age is determined by his/her age as of December 31st 2017.

2)  Age Divisions & Weight Classes

    BANTAM DIVISION: AGES  7 AND UNDER
    36 - 40 - 44 - 48 - 52 - 56 - 60 - 64 - 72 - 80 - 100

    MIDGET DIVISION: AGES 8 & 9
    50 - 55 - 60 - 65 - 70 - 75 - 80 - 90 - 100 - 110 - 120 - 150

    JUNIOR DIVISION: AGES 10-11
    58 - 62 - 66 - 70 - 74 - 78 - 82 - 86 - 91 - 98 - 105 - 115 - 130 - 163

    INTERMEDIATE DIVISION: AGES 12-14
    70 - 77 - 84 - 91 - 98 - 106 - 113 - 120 - 126 - 132 - 138 - 145 - 160 - 182 - 228

In early March the MDWL League Championship tournament is held. 

The goal of our MDWL program is to provide Loudoun County and surrounding area wrestlers with training and competition opportunities that will allow them to grow as wrestlers while they learn lessons that will help them develop into well rounded individuals.  In addition to our MDWL schedule, the Ranger Wrestling Club coaching staff will provide wrestlers with additional competition and training opportunities throughout the season.  These additional opportunities will not be mandatory, but will be encouraged. 

Q: Who should participate in the Ranger's MDWL program?
A:  Individuals who are new to wrestling and wrestlers with 2-4 years of experience who really enjoy the sport, want to continue to improve and can commit to 2 practices a week. New wrestlers will be encouraged to compete, but not mandatory.  Experienced wrestlers will be encourage to compete in at least 5 MDWL events, 3 in which will be in Loudoun County and only need 4 to qualify for the season ending tournament. 

Q: My son or daughter is new to wrestling, is the Rangers the right place? Is it too Hard?

A: The Rangers and MDWL caters to all levels of wrestlers. In fact it is not mandatory as a beginner to compete at all.  We will also pair the wrestlers up with similar age/weight/experienced level wrestlers.  With time, new wrestlers build confidence and skills to be able to compete at the higher level. 

 

Q: Why should our wrestler compete in the MDWL?
A:  The MDWL provides youth wrestlers an opportunity to train for and compete against other beginners in the PA, MD and VA area.  I also provides opportunities for advance wrestlers to challenge themselves against tough competition in a format that prepares them for the CAWL Program and subsequent success at the H.S level.  Participation in the Rangers' MDWL program isn't as much about wins and losses as it is about providing the kids with the tools they need to be successful wrestlers at the high school level and confidence in life.

Q:  Do you accept wrestlers from other area clubs that have recreational or NVWF teams, but do not have a CAWL program?
A:  Yes.  We are open to working and working with wrestlers from other local programs.  Our focus is on adding value to the wrestler's development, not taking ownership or credit for it.  In these situations, the wrestler would need to commit to 1 practice a week with our program, a minimum of 2 practices a week with their home club and availability to participate in a minimum of 4 events with our team.
